BEAUTIFULLY SHOT/SAPPY PLOT
It's easy to get the impression that the Vikings robbed, raped and killed for the same reason that Bill did Monica--because they could and because it was fun. You would think that Hollywood would have paid more attention to such a fun loving bunch. I have no idea how many films dealt with these guys prior to 1958 when this film was released, but director Fleisher points out that this was without question the most "authentic" Viking picture ever made. I can believe that, since it was shot partially on location in the fjords of Norway and particular attention was paid to the costumes and boat design. So it's a bit of a shame that the film is marred by a sappy love plot involving Kirk Douglas and pretty boy Tony Curtis as half-brothers contending for the love of an English Queen (played by Curtis' real life wife, Janet Leigh). (I suspect the mis-cast Curtis was part of some sort of two-for-one deal.) Only Kirk Douglas and Ernest Borgnine really seem at home here.
