<[:-} “don’t make me light this short fuse!”
the big attractions here are “ellie-jo” (jocelyn jones) and, especially, “candy” (the mighty claudia jennings). the similarities to “thelma and louise” are too strong to be coincidental in this movie released 15 years earlier (1976), with jones in the gina davis part and jennings in the susan sarandon role. johnny “the rifleman” crawford plays the brad pitt part in near silence. in “tgtdc” economic injustice, asshole bosses, and cracker claustrophobia set the stage for revolt rather than the general villainy of the male sex that drove “t&l.” a bank has a confederate flag prominently displayed. after several comical wet fart sounding duds, ellie-jo complains: “where’d you get that honky dynamite, man?” the political aspirations of “tgtdc” are minimal. this is an archetypical drive-in movie. plot, plot logic, and even basic sanity are also in very short supply, but in a way that adds to the entertainment value. like most roger corman products, gtdc is successfully character driven, with flawed good guys you can cheer for and uncool villains you despise. there are corn pone softcore fetish touches that are reminiscent of the bethel g. buckalew catalog. the theme music, by craig safan, is exceptional, but has the word “dynamite” repeated in a very irritating way. i think it was added post-production. a very brief, respectful introduction by corman played the first time i loaded the disc, where he said that jennings died young [29, car accident] just as she was about to break out as a legitimate movie star.
