<[:-} fluffy fun
the back story of “blonde ice” resembles a horizontal “baby face.” the protagonist of “baby face” sleeps her way to the top of a major bank. the protagonist of “blonde ice” has slept with every man who writes a column at the newspaper where she now has gotten her own column. the movie opens just before her wedding ceremony, to the wealthiest of her conquests. the rest are all there. they all have gold cigarette cases she has given them, each inscribed “to [insert chump name here], all my love.” they all deal with their loss in different ways. one of them is a vicious little weasel. a few minutes after the ceremony, she is kissing one of them on the balcony, telling the kissee that she has no intention of breaking it off with him, saying she’s going to think about him on her honeymoon, with no fear of being caught. she does get caught, by her new husband no less, but effortlessly lies her way out of it. the main theme of the movie, explicitly stated more than once, is that she always gets what she wants from men. the acting in “blonde ice” is more impressionistic than bad, probably executed as directed, done with an attention deficient, cheap thrill seeking audience in mind. i believe everyone involved in making “blonde ice” knew what they were doing, and what they were doing was making a “b” movie. trust me, they did. a disgraced pilot piles on the noir ham in a way that is somehow both familiar and laughably weird. the beautiful lead actress often has a cunning sneer on her face when she should appear devastated with grief, etc. its as if she assumes no one is watching her, when the whole movie revolves around the theme that everyone is watching her, all the time. after the wedding and honeymoon, “blonde ice” imitates a noir, with murder and an assortment of other foul play, but the proceedings, while certainly reprehensible, unfold in a workman like way that lacks the gritty presentation and mean spirit necessary to shock. i think it might have been intentionally lightweight, just wanting to a fun movie. later, “blonde ice” goes back into discount “baby face” mode, and then into nerf psycho-killer mode. the ending is a hoot, a “perry mason” type inexplicable confession, brought about by the implausibly omnipotent ability of a psychiatrist (who “has a lot of experience in criminal cases”) to intimidate evil doers.
