Decomp Romp
Warped and slimed, undulating and muck covered, and shimmering amid a thousand points of blight, these are images of the past losing the battle with time - with special effects provided by nature. Plenty to think about in terms of mortality, etc., but I won't go into all of that right now. This film not only shows how decomposition alters (often beautifully) different images, but how decomposition itself can differ from film to film depending on the stage it's at. There's an apparition-like quality to seeing a Chinese woman's face emerge fleetingly from an amorphous stew of blobs and bubbles and goo. Also an even comical sense of irony at a boxer punching bravely at a merciless wall of enveloping blackness, like a bad force-field effect from Dr. Who. Apart from occasional glimpses of the familiar (silent cowboy star William S. Hart grimacing at the camera and someone who looks like Mary Pickford cradling a child) most of these images are banal actualities (children marching by nuns, ships cutting through waves, Arabian dancers, scurrying ants in an anthill prodded by a stick, amoebas and baccilli, etc.). For all the hue and cry over the loss of our film heritage, there's ironically nothing much in these images to suggest that their loss is all that tragic. More sad is seeing anonymous humans who died off literally, and in the memories of others, long ago. ** Decasia (2002) c. 2004 Kevin Rayburn notspam9999REMOVE@yahoo.com (remove REMOVE to write)
