!!!SPOILER!!! i put off renting this john sayles penned cash-in on “jaws” because i was sure i’d seen it in theatrical release. if so, my memory is bad enough to have made renting it a fresh experience. sayles manages to work a fairly serious radical theme into a comic book like script. the little mutants in the lab at the start of the film are hilarious. after the viewer gets comfortable with the bloodless, almost slapstick comedy, he then gets slapped up side the head with graphic gore in a serious context. sayles violates the unwritten law of exploitation that, no matter who is placed in peril, only sexually active teenagers or adults who are either bad, greedy, nerdy, or belong to an ethnic minority get killed or seriously injured. here we have innocent children being graphically defleshed by micromonsters created for use on vietnamese civilians by the feds. the effect is startling.
