this has the highest production values of any of the eddie romero movies i’ve seen, but its also the blandest. sid haig is on board as “east eddie,” providing the only competent acting i’ve seen in any of romero’s films. the atlantean’s ping pong eyeballs go without comment for 20 minutes and then are conjectured to be a result of “environment” or possibly “incest.” the dialogue is usually as weird as you’d expect in a romero movie, but is at least comprehensible most of the time. there’s no nudity, but we are treated to several minutes of close-ups of leigh christian’s taut, rippling buttocks. anyone wanting to dip their toes in the fishy waters off blood island would be better off starting with the highly entertaining “brides of blood.”
