with “revolt of the zombies” the halperins try to tap into the success of their “pre-code” great “white zombie.” fear of asians (cambodians) is exploited, with a “zombie spell” that creates invincible soldiers so terrifying that a joint military force of post wwi combatant nations is dispatched to wipe out anyone deemed capable of casting it. desire for a woman leads to absolute (evil) power, corruption, regret, repudiation, and horrible retribution for an average joe. the phrase “ego trip” is used early on, surprising me. i thought it was a 60s phrase. “king of the zombies” is an imitation bela lugosi spooky comedy, with mantan moreland dominating the show. his scaredy cat routine is pretty offensive, but he gets in a lot of good, apparently improvised, one liners. the look on his face when he reaches for a brandy and “dr. sangre” [lugosi knock-off] pulls it back is priceless. margueritte whitten creates a tasty maid. joan woodbury adds a touch of sweet sleaze.
