RECOMMENDED! the housing shortage in late 20s moscow sets the stage for a claustrophobic, no privacy menage a trois that is handled with a modern sensibility and unforced entertaining quality that amazed me. movie buffs should slobber over the movie's technical achievements and overall great look. the main cast is perfect, and they fill "bed and sofa" with great small moments i can't describe adequately. liudmila (liudmila semyonova) is especially good. my favorite scene has her waking up in bed with her husband's war buddy and gently biting the bed rail in momentary regret. she has what appears to be a photo of cab calloway on her wall. i found time for about ten minutes of the audio commentary. at first, i was sorry i hadn't been aware of all the symbolic significance i had missed, but i got over it quickly. the short feature "chess fever" is whimsical and cute. it includes brief footage of legendary chess grandmasters capablanca, marshall, and grunfeld.
