Post-modern deconstruction of materialism
Although the her in Godard's title refers to the city of Paris, it also refers, ostensibly, to the film's main character, Juliette. Godard's approach is to demonstrate the effect that industrial capitalism has on the modern city, as well as its inhabitants, by examining it's impact on the physical world. In the case of Paris, its impact is felt through the endless construction of buildings, the intrusive presence of advertising, and the systematic rape of what may be called a city's "natural" landscape. In the case of the individual, the effect is much the same, albeit micro as opposed to macro. Individuals become consumed by fashion, advertising and other such pop culture staples. Both the individual and the collective, in this case, the city, become alienated ny the distance that develops between what they feel instinctively as their "selves" and what they see around them in their environment. Objects become things devoid of true metaphysical weight, language is reduced to a mere pragmatic exercise of facts . Godard says in the film that in order to live in Paris, which here serves as a type of the modern city, one must resort to some form of prostitution in order to survive.Juliette becomes a prostitute in order to enable her consumer behavior. She is a prostitute on more than one level, both physically and emotionally; to man and to materialism.
