<[:-} raiders of the lost square up reel?
for me, the “square up reel” is the holy grail of roadshow exploitation. when drunk and/or unsophisticated audiences, angered by how far short of the hype the exploitation movie they paid to see fell, started to hoot, holler, and tear out the seats (and no if cops were around) the roadshowman would drag out the square up reel. lo and behold, this dvd contains "forbidden daughters" in the extras, probably the juciest of the well known square up reels. this silent short from the 30s, a.k.a "the girls of loma-loma," has unhurried nudity, including some full frontal, provided by 20 some odd women. some quaint "exotic" dancing is featured, along with harem dungeon bondage and a banana eating sequence. the heroine "alma" and several of the "harem girls" are very attractive, sporting professional make-up and hairstyles. they look like they might have just stepped off the lot of a major studio making a "pre-code" movie. alma reclaims her fiancee from the spell of the very light skinned jungle "princess loma" by abandoning her "civilized" inhibitions, and her clothing. i didn't even know this priceless short was on the dvd. i had already rented "bowanga, bowanga" on vhs a few weeks ago, but wanted to take a chance on "virgin sacrifice," the third main feature. it has interesting color photography and interesting scenery, including dirty dancing in a colorful nightclub and brief but attractive toplessness. the mood is surprisingly serious, which works against its sense of fun. the "vicuni," "bad indians" who "still worship the old god," are the reviled ethnic minority du jour. having known a mercenary who was paid per pair of ears to kill amazonian indians who resisted having their land stolen, it was a little hard to take it as silly fun. "wild women of wongo" might appeal to some people as an embarrassing relic, but it bored me mercilessly.
