<[:-} something borrowed, something blue
my favorite segment is george griffin's "a little routine" about a man getting his young daughter ready for bed. the animation is colorful and imaginative, and it accompanies an intelligent script and perfect voice overs. its sort of creepy to juxtapse the two, but my second favorites are the two by signe baume, who has an eye-catching take on male / female relationships. these two make this dvd highly inappropriate for minors. i've always cheered when this sort of animated anthology played "on the big screen" here, but it doesn't have the same impact at home on a tiny tube. at least two of these shorts has been included in previous anthologies that have played here before: bill plymplton's "one of those days" and john schnall's "good night norma, good night milton." several others, including schnall's thanksgiving turkeys going to heaven thing, plympton's "how to make love to a woman," and "sub" seemed really familiar. i usually watch animation with a very high blood alcohol level, which makes them more interesting but harder to remember. i think most of these have been screened at either the vogue or at baxter avenue. "one of those days" has played more than once. most of the segments include some sort of extras, where the thank yous make it clear this compilation is an incestuous affair, with every contributor connected somehow to at least one other. six degrees of bill plympton? the first few segments reference musicians like (the real) tuesday weld and tim finn. they are clever and professional looking but didn't have any resonance with me.
