this makes “ilsa...” look like “bambi.” if you hired charles manson to remake “a man named horse” and fed him tidbits of john waters’ and kenneth anger’s brains during the filming, you might get something like this. in a death camp, a young woman’s provocative stoicism during torture so amuses her nazi captors that she becomes a pet and survives. the formula for a women in prison film is humiliation and brutality followed by cathartic revenge. in this film the revenge is set up, but is so jaw droppingly weak in execution that i wonder if they would have liked to leave it out altogether. as with fellow late 70s, italian films like “goodbye uncle tom” that exploit fascist depravity, you can’t help but realize that the film makers are so cynical that they think this stuff is funny. this one follows “ilsa...” into the realm of outrageous camp, but it takes nearly the nitschean amorality espoused by the villians in this film to appreciate it. having said all that, this is a great piece of transgressive exploitation. just check you soul at the door.
