this fun movie belongs to exotic beauty anitra ford, who plays the aptly named "terry rich," a sultry femme fatale that has apparently single "handedly" compromised the reputations of nearly all the leaders of the phillipines. she gets plenty of help from the rest of the huge ensemble cast, all of whom, professional or amateur, deliver memorable performances under jack hill's direction. i'm a big fan of hill's work, and i liked this movie enough to replay it with his commentary on. he says that "the big doll house" spawned so many imitators that the concept was played out by the time they could get this "sequel" rolling. he decided "the only thing to do was to make a spoof." he admits that the movie is short on plot, but is understandably proud of the individual scenes in the movie. he points out that it is in this movie that pam grier really began to assert herself as a great actress. in the scene where grier, using a kriss (wavy dagger), fights sid haig, who wields a dead duck, the duck was real, and grier got pelted with dead duck feces, just before she hits the mud. hill is really proud of grier's mud wrestling love scene with sid haig, which immediately follows the duck thing. gettin' nasty! hill's father designed the fantastic, titular "big bird cage." hill says quentin tarentino calls vic diaz (an eddie romero regular) "the filipine peter lorre." hill wrote diaz', and the other guard's, characters as really swishy gays, a decision they were not happy with but wound up playing to the hilt, so to speak. when would be revolutionary haig poses as a gay man to infiltrate the camp, the interplay between him and the guards is decidedly politically incorrect but undeniably "riveting" entertainment. karen mckevic, who hill claims is "nearly 7' tall," plays a lesbian who is baited throughout the movie by louisville's own carol speed, who delivers all her lines in a very provocative manner. at one point, mckevic pursues speed through the dormitory, very impressively dragging the cot she is chained to along with her. its a great scene, with speed squealing and dodging in seemingly real terror. hill is a master of chixploitation, with an unequaled imaginative flair, and the tna here is beautiful, bountiful, and plenty. he is unhappy with the amount of "violence," actually all the explosions and gunshots, preferring implication of violence of the sort he so masterfully presented in "the big doll house." hill's movies were always far ahead of his contemporaries in social consciousness, but there are elements of this movie he now finds awkward, such as ford's insistence that she couldn't be raped because she likes sex, making the prisoners comically man hungry, calling an asian woman "chop suey," and the gay characterizations. he points out that, in spite of all this, feminists applauded the movie, and it had its longest runs in gay dominated theaters.
