SAD AND SCARY
The worst slum or favela high above Rio de Janeiro is known as the City of God (because it's closer to the Big Guy). With gangs of ten-year olds carrying large caliber guns, this place makes East LA look like Disneyland. And the corruption of the Brazilian cops far exceeds even that of the infamous LA police. How anyone ever survives to become an 18-year old multiple murderer and gang leader is a mixture of simple luck and utter ruthlessness. Unless you can find enjoyment in spending two hours watching children kill and be killed, you might want to skip this one. Having said that, this probably fairly accurately depicts reality in that part of the world--at least in 1997-98. And, let's admit it, crime and murder (of others, of course) are rarely boring. Interesting and well done from a cinematic point of view, but depressing due to the nature of the subject matter.
