<[:-\ not as bad as you'd expect
...and therefore not as entertaining. this low budget, independent film is set in an impossibly politically correct, benign, congenial, egalitarian, post-apartheid, integrated south african bush territory (think australian "outback"). a buffoonish hollywood producer lures other americans into the bush for a streaming web-cast "reality show" about the mythical "half-caste" were-leopard, thinking he is getting over on them by arranging for the locals to scare them with "snipe hunt" type trickery. the guides have the clueless producer eating various types of animal dung "for energy," and inflicting other indignities on him, as they revel in his foolish delusions of cosmopolitanism. the unspoken running gag is that the americans are all expecting fearful exoticism in a very ordinary locale populated by "average joe" types. "half-caste" does a very good job of spoofing american "reality shows." the editing, acting, and dialogue are dead on, faithfully reproducing the inane, interchangeable, insincere "interaction" that never varies from show to show. during the main body of the movie, with the locals goofing on the americans in between scenes of them embarrassing themselves with their neuroses, pretensions, and prima donna squeamishness, "half-caste" is a well constructed but insubstantial dry comedy. the obligatory "surprise" ending is a lot sloppier, and much less amusing, trying for "blair witch" exploitation (a reference made explicitly in the extras). with a high enough blood / alcohol ratio its watchable. some of the climactic stunt work is amusingly reminiscent of "animala" in "the lost skeleton of cadavera."
