<[:-} “someone down there likes me”
“beat girl” opens with “jenny” (gillian hills) in an outrageously appealing dance number. i think she was supposed to be britain’s answer to ann-margret. as darren pointed out, it is very reminiscent of the money shot in “ghost world.” another great visual scene is the “rebel without a cause” type scene where the kids play chicken with their necks on a train track. both hills and noelle adams, who plays jenny’s very young (trophy wife) stepmother “nichole,” provide plenty of sympathetic eye candy but very little skin in this 1960 brit movie. otherwise: dude! where’s my subtitles? i know i missed a lot of good stuff in this dialogue driven film. i have trouble understanding speech anyway, and the accents are an unfamiliar upper middle class brit. the “teenagers” consistently speak in what is supposed to be beat slang but is probably unknown to anyone except the writer, dail amber, who has two other imdb credits. even the adult dialogue is full of unexpected phrases, especially when the parents are trying to outsmug the kids. darren pointed out that when christopher lee’s pimp character finds the apparently captivated jenny at his door, he says “someone down there likes me,” perverting the heavenly favor cliche into satanic favor. what little of the dialogue i did catch was intelligent and edgy enough to keep my interest. the conflict between the kid’s “wild” behavior and their snooty stiff upper whatever attitudes was disorienting. writing this ramble i got distracted by the discovery that gillian hills played “sonietta” in one of my favorite movies, “a clockwork orange.” [was i told this before i rented the movie?] she’s in one of the most outrageous sequences. she’s one of the presumably pre-teen or early teen boppers alexander picks up in the music store. in a childish, vapid voice she asks alexander if he’s going to buy “heaven 17 of johnny zhivago.” he delivers the famous line about the girl’s presumed personal “pitiful portable picnic players,” and invites them home. he drugs them, and totally wears them out in an extended slapstick sped up rapeathon set to the william tell overture. that scene was cut in at least one of the movie’s releases. according to imdb, hills was 14 when “beat girl” was released. i can’t believe she was that young, but wasn’t able to confirm or deny with another source. this would make her 25 when “a clockwork orange” was released, successfully playing a character a good bit younger than the one she played in “beat girl!” i think i’ve outed another vampire, folks. also, am i the only one that suspects that that nichole’s old stripper co-worker “greta” (delphi lawrence) is a transexual?
