FRENCH MISFIRE
I'll watch anything directed by Bertrand Tavernier--especially if it stars the excellent Philippe Noiret. In 1920, after WWI has ended, 50-something Major Dellaplane (Noiret) is fanatic about trying to identify some of the 350,000 French anonymous dead. When wealthy, politically connected Sophie Azema shows up searching for her missing (and presumed dead) husband, Noiret falls for her. Period. That's it. That's the story line. Don't expect a war movie with battle scenes. What we have here is primarily a character study--and that means lots of talk--mainly anti-war talk. Azema, subbing for the more charismatic Fanny Ardent, seems at times a poor foil for Noiret. The supporting cast, with the exception of a young girl searching for her fiance (who turns out of be Azema's husband), is forgettable. A story line with no drama, a love story with little convincing emotion. A rare misfire from Tavernier. Needless to say, the critics loved it!
