RECOMMENDED! i'm thinking "take moldy prints of 'sunset boulevard,' 'singapore sling,' and 'boxing helena,' bury them with the vodka marinated, irradiated corpse of a nuclear technician duped into working on the colossal concrete lump dumped on chernobyl, come back to retrieve the fused cinder, and then gaze at its lovecraftian glow until your brain runs out your nose." mickey rooney, obviously fueled by some brompton's cocktail of illegal drugs heavy on the speedy end, is a hyperactive homunculus hopping around and doing demented song and dance routines. at one point, he applies eye makeup and lipstick and sticks his face in the camera lens, a sight very reminiscent of one of keith auerbach's dog photographs. "b.j. lang presents" is essentially an extended, distorted version of the scene in "a clockwork orange" where alex and his droogies rape the trophy wife in front of her trumpy husband. imdb says this atrocity was released on 15 december 1971 and "a clockwork orange" was released 19 december 1971. if it could be documented that no one making either movie was aware of the other movie before either was made, we would have substantial evidence of the existence of omnipresent evil. in "bjlp" its made clear that the phallic nose common to both movies is part of a costume / prop set for the role of cyrano de bergerac. alex is drugged and sociopathic. b.j. is a delusional psychotic. where the woman in "aco" is willfully terrorized and raped, luanne anders ("easy rider") plays a captive audience / actress forced to watch and participate in a hallucination of the making of a movie, and later she is assaulted sexually. she spends most of the movie bound to a wheel chair. in the end, we see her being pursued, terrified through the bizarre set, viewing her through a battery of trippy photographic tricks. when she first comes on camera, she repeatedly moans "i'm hungry mr. lang." he spoon-feeds her baby food. anders remains relentlessly immersed in her role throughout the movie. for me, her intensity is the most disturbing aspect of the movie. it matches the performances of the two women in "singapore sling" (1990). cult movie lore has it that everyone involved in the making of the movie stayed f'd up on acid the whole time, but i saw nary a blown pupil in any of the close-ups. we see party / bacchanal fantasies, but rooney and anders have the only speaking roles except a great cameo by keenan wynn at the end, playing an old wino. the multi-mutagenic larry cohen is credited for "art direction and set design." the set is a filthy warehouse filled to the high roof with mannequins, stuffed animals, and other moldy movie-making miscellany, and it seems to be lit by putrescent luminescence. the cobwebs are as phony looking as ed wood's UFOs, but the thick coat of nasty dust on everything must be real. you could be infected with ringworm just watching this movie. gil melle's music is often as jaw grinding grating as the soundtrack to the ormand family's immortal "mesa of lost women," but at times it is hauntingly, inappropriately beautiful.
