if it weren't for heather graham and her vulnerable, sympathetic persona, this movie would have been a waste of time. coming off like "rosemary's village of the damned," this is close to being a remake that substitutes "new age" atmosphere for gothic as a horrific device. i read a couple of reviews by bad movie buffs who expressed surprise that "blessed" "works." there's some great wtf? dialogue, but its hard to tell how much of it is intentional. for every giggle inducing line, there's at least one groan inducing cliche like "i'd kill for a house like that." a particularly pathetic scene tries to make an anagram out of "evangelists" and "evil agents," where having both words plural puts an extra "s" in the former. the cinematography is pretty good. the art direction is lame. the acting and direction are good enough to make it painful when they stumble and fall. i get the impression that second guessing / script re-writes caused a budget / time crunch. the first half of the movie is much better than the second. the plot rots before your eyes, and it all grinds to a halt with a hail mary pass type ending that depends entirely on a really cheap and laughably bad makeup effect. the real shame is that the good half of the movie is really dull, setting up a climax that never happens.
