<[:-} "what is it?" "nothing. your mother's escaped."
"99.9" requires patience and attention but will pay off in the end. the strongest element is the rabid performance from terele pavez. the first time i watched "99.9" it seemed slow and bland up to the point where i realized it must be the product of very sick minds. watching it the second time, i identified all the clive barker buttons it was trying to push, but still remained detached. i finally decided it is too transgressive to ignore. a "poltergeist" type house in an abandoned spanish village is infected by restless, unclean spirits, having been the site of a brothel whose prostitutes, and their children, were slaughtered 100 years ago by french soldiers. the authentic, ancient looking field stone walls will provide a chill for the rural-phobic. reminiscent of both "poltergeist" and john carpenter's "prince of darkness," evil spirits are manifested in untuned television static, by way of hypnotized, drugged, or degenerate minds. they also appear in drawings that are said but never shown to live and move on the walls and floor. some look like kindergarten doodles, others look like "modern art." the plot has a whodunit structure that probably works better in the original spanish. the translation subtitles are a little sloppy, but they do have great lines like "what is it?" "nothing. your mother's escaped [from the insane asylum]." two reviews i scanned praised the cinematography. it may have been good in 35mm, large screen format, but it was too soft in this transfer, played on my cheapo setup. key visual elements like the hair and fingernail fetish voodoo and bugs bunny in the cemetery "sculptures" and the bondage chair seemed lame, if they could be distinguished at all. in the end, "99.9" is dependent on fear of the old, rural settings, female sexuality, and other triggers that don't scare someone familiar with them. there is extensive, 3x male nudity, pre-pubescent girl nudity, and a flash of adult female nudity. the title, "99.9" was chosen by the director because it is "the number of the beast" inverted. spain has been a consistent source of undiluted horror. i'm really looking forward to jaume balaguero's anna paquin vehicle "darkness," which opens christmas day [wtf!?!].
