Chan and Whang Jang Lee!!
And what's so special about this movie? I'll tell you: for starters Jackie fights top villain Hwang Jang Lee, who spices up any movie [Lee is a Shaw veteran and a very skilled fighter/ kicker]. And secondly this is an early effort by choreographing superstar Yuen Woo Ping (or haven't you seen the Matrix?), who also directed this movie, thus giving Jackie a break from Lo Wei. "Snake Fist" and "Eagle Claw" are two different Kung fu styles. In this story Whang Jang Lee plays a clan leader and Eagle stylist who is determined to wipe out all practitioners of the Snake school. Jackie plays Chien Fu, "a simple-minded menial worker at a dojo, who winds up befriending an old beggar (Yuen Siu-Tien) who is the last practitioner of the Snake Fist. Chien winds up developing his own fighting technique based on how a cat defends itself against a snake" (Erik Lundegaard). Well, it might not make since how that beats and Eagle, "but still!", the fighting styles are varied and remarkable- not a surprise when you have a movie with the input and impact of three brilliant talents such as Chan, Whang Lee, and Woo-ping! Sure, you get some quirky music, and general silliness, but its worth it for all the shining moments of graceful combat. No, its not an 'awesome' movie, but better than the general run of the mill and a rare chance to see such a unique combination. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars. Matt
