this is an odd mockumentary that veers from painstaking realism to very broad comedy without warning. supposedly, peter jackson and costa botes submitted this straight faced to a new zealand documentary series and many people bought it, in spite of such gaffes as chickens squawking when a bicycle wrecks in a crude, silent bit of footage. the best part of the "behind the bull" segment in the extras was the filmmakers claiming that various college professors had waxed on about their expertise regarding the fictional subject, a pioneering filmmaker named colin mckenzie. that segment of the disc had, at best, sensationalized documentation of anger from the duped kiwis, making me suspect that the reported hoax is in itself a hoax on the viewer of the disc! the highpoints of the mocumentary proper include a supremely unfunny comedian who slaps a baby in a stroller in the face with a pie and then, with an impish grin, sets it rolling down the hill. sarah mcleod, who plays may belle, effectively creates the illusion of being one of the great leading ladies of silent cinema. she is in two of “the lord of the rings” movies: “fellowship of the ring” and “the return of the king.”
