!!!SPOILER ALERT!!! the opening sequence is campy, but very witty, segueing into a great title sequence. its kind of hard to remember anything after that. there are some great location shots but the incessant “sophisticated” dialogue would leave a trekkie glassy eyed with boredom. we have a very interesting anti-heroine who is criminally wasted and forced out of character during her premature exit. i played enough of the commentary to try to find an explanation for why she goes from ubervixenbutch to nearly drowning in terror at a sight that wouldn’t frighten anyone except francis ford coppola, only to hear the commentator refer to the family doctor as “the detective, or whatever.” i don’t blame him for being confused; he sure doesn’t come across as a doctor. the other characters are either very poorly drawn, or else just not interesting. the older brother greets “the bad girl” with a lingering open mouth kiss and then treats her, and everyone else, with borderline threatening hostility for the rest of the film. if his problem was ever explained, i didn’t care enough for it to register. jack hill is usually listed as “uncredited” but gets second-banana billing on this dvd. compare this crap with “spider baby,” which is listed one year later, and you realize that the now famous f.f.c. was a disorganized blowhard at the very start of his over-rated career, and this film would have been much better without him. “apocalypse now” is great, transcending its origins. dracula was pretty good. i'll admit that i need to see "the converstaion" again, but otherwise i feel confident in pronouncing the rest of his work to be over-blown crap. godfather this.
