KRAMER'S EPIC STINKER
Director Stanley Kramer made a lot of good movies. This ain't one of them. The late fifties to the early seventies could well be called The Age of Epics. Hollywood fell over itself in throwing barrels of cash at anyone who could turn any historical episode into a three-hour long "blockbuster." Set in Spain during the Napoleonic Wars, this film features Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant and Sophia Loren trying to drag a ridiculously huge cannon across Spain in order to use against the French army. Literally everyone seems out of place: scrawny Sinatra, with a crappy Spanish accent, looks more like Don Knotts than a guerilla leader. The usually suave Grant looks uncomfortable and almost silly in his blue naval uniform. And the normally translucent Loren looks less than stunning in a reddish wig. She is also photographed too often in profile, exposing a longish nose and weak chin. Poor Loren has never looked so common! The only highlight I can come up with is of Loren, in a tight bodice, dancing the flamenco. A curious feature of this film are a number of scenes in which the hordes of extras stand around silently gawking at the stars. Unless bad movies are your bag, run when you see this on the shelf. Speaking of Napoleon: can anyone explain why Louisville should have named a street, nay, a boulevard, after this murderous dictator? May as well have a Hitler Highway or a Stalin Parkway or a Mao Lane, it seems to me.
