HEY, IT AIN'T WORTH STEALING
So: How do you make a pedestrian film about one of the most colorful, controversial figures of the 60's? Well, for starters, put the decidedly less than charismatic Vincent D'Onofrio in the lead role. Second, present the film in an banal interview-cum-flashback style. Let's be honest--Ol' Vin simply doesn't have the acting chops to do justice to the superb political clown that was Abbie Hoffman. While director Greenwald is sympathetic to Hoffman (his very real personality disorders were surely exacerbated both by his use of drugs and the constant persecution of Hoover's FBI), his Abbie is more pathetic than inspiring. Janeane Garofolo is good at Hoffman's radical, yet down-to-earth first wife.
