yet another digitally shot movie, this time not that bad looking, "moloch" is a 1999 russian "comedy" that isn't funny (or much of anything else). i don't really see the point of "moloch," but then i can't remember if i have seen or heard of any other 24 hours in the life of hitler movie. despite juxtaposing hitler's assumed courtly tableside manners with talk of "corpse tea," this is really pretty bland stuff. eva braun does ballet-o-robics on the castle battlements before waking "adi" up for a little domination talk. they eat, they talk, ... a sniper keeps hitler in his sights, at on point catching him in the act of taking a dump outdoors. the actor that plays goebbels is credited with a man's name, but i think he is played by a cross-dressing woman. hitler is played more like a plump, comfortable oliver hardy type than the fidgety, rabid weasel well documented on film. other revisionism has him deny knowledge of the existence of auschwitz. some one else says "its not to be spoken." it wasn't clear if they meant to imply the existence of the extermination camps was hidden from hitler by his underlings, or if he was so afraid of prosecution after the war that he didn't want the word used. this is pretty bizarre, after the viewer has seen him hand feed guests crab legs and heard him say "we catch them with dead grandmas." he goes on to say they first let the grandmas rot for three days, and they wind up with crabs hanging all over them like "a multi-limbed hindu goddess." make no mistake, this exchange is a rare moment of shock in an otherwise banal script. the nazi attitude toward women does get attention: "the more stupid a woman is the more expressive she is." that night hitler rapes eva (a routine event) behind footage of a pilot looking into his bomb sights. the end credit for each actor is paired with an actor credited for "stimme." i'm guessing "moloch" was shot mos and dubbed into german. if so, even without speaking german, i'd say this was the best dubbing i can remember in a movie, judging solely on the sound of their voices, and the only individual credits for dubbing i can remember seeing. its a shame that subtitle snobbery and desire to save money has kept other filmmakers from using actual actors, talented and prepared, to make movies accessible to other language speakers while preserving some semblance of credibility, not to mention dignity. to be fair, the "krimi" films w&w recently acquired aren't dubbed that badly, but the dubbing is always mismatched enough to add to the disorientating effects of these strange films, increasing their entertainment value. if i spoke german, the dubbing here might seem similarly disembodied. toward the end of "moloch," the filmmakers seemed to be indulging in some typical eastern european whimsy. when one character asks (about the documentary within the film) "why make such a film?" i'm sure they are self-conscious of their own film.
