though their acquisitions tend to be better than their own productions, i've learned to avoid anything troma sells the same as i avoid wet coughs or dry sour cream. after reading "fear without frontiers," this barry prima movie was one tromatrocity i had to make an exception for. while not exactly a bruce lee, or even a jim kelley, barry prima was an martial arts movie star of some international repute, but his movies seem to be nearly unavailable here and now. this one, probably typical of prima's output, is so stupid it left my brain screaming like a strangled hemmoroid, which places it squarely in the middle of the massive dumps left in the wake of van damme, norris, seagal, and the many lesser dumps left by lesser rip-offs. prima has "charisma" on a par with van damme and respectable footsie form. what makes "4f" so pathetic is the utter incompetence of fight choreography coordination between direction and fight choreography. when people say "that kick missed him by a foot" its usually an exaggeration. in a theme recycled by some recent japanese movies, the action revolves around unsanctioned women's pro-wrestling. like said movies, the women fighters were selected for their looks and not their ability to fake a fight. a lot of the interminable cat fight footage filler is too lame to even be funny. there's only the briefest flash of "nudity," but a lot of attractive female flesh in action, even a mild sex scene. presumably to avoid prosecution for their illegal gambling, patrons of the fights all wear irritatingly ill-concealing eye masks. make no mistake, this movie is so bad that watching it is committing a crime against nature, a sort of cinematic sodomy. what makes it worthwhile is the bizarre, unexpected elements. of the dvd options, i chose "the [english dubbed] indonesian version" and skipped "the ["what's up tiger lily?" rip-off] tromatic version." i got pounded with line after line like "its people like you who give principles a bad name" and "if you ever touch her again, you won't have a head to see her with." its unusual seeing prima with a cigarette dangling from his lips as he trains the heroine in the ring. the last third of the movie is marked by increasingly violent content, the movie's most commercially attractive asset. in a flashback, prima, tied to a chair, is burned with cigarettes (complete with graphic wound fx) before he sees grinning goons take turns punching his pregnant wife in the abdomen. in the climactic (but, unfortunately, not final) fight scene, the carnage approaches a peter jackson level of prolonged (here unintentionally) comical overkill that includes acid burning a face into featurelessness, a human torch, throwing stars loaded with something like phosphorus that burn through eye sockets into skulls and burn off arms at the shoulder, and way more than enough of the usual rib, limb, and neck breaking, stabbings, stakings, gouged out eyes, and stomped out lungs, all impressively accompanied by agonized outcries like a chorus of the damned.
