to be honest, i don’t remember many details from jonathan demme’s “caged heat” (1974), a women in prison movie with a feminist sensibility obviously influenced by jack hill’s “big doll house” (1971). i do remember enjoying it. demme takes a much lighter tone, omitting the extreme cruelty to, and among, inmates. “caged heat” sets the tone early on with one prisoner telling another a joke about a traveling salesman who misinterprets the purpose of a hotel appliance labeled “wife away from home” and ends up with a button sewn on the end of his “johnson,” told with coarsely funny pantomime. the only humor i can remember in “big doll house” was pam grier “reaching out to” sid haig, and it was grim humor. i certainly don’t begrudge demme’s success, especially in light of his having given the world the immortal “silence of the lambs” and the amusing “something wild,” and also proving that even egomaniacally pretentious, ankle biting, snotty art sissies can be made to appear interesting with “stop making sense.” however, it is very galling to imagine what hill could have accomplished with even a small part of the industry acceptance demme found. barbara steele fans will enjoy her villainous, paraplegic warden, and cheryl “rainbeaux” smith fans will enjoy the generous serving of her here.
