ANOTHER FRITZ LANG WINNER
Fritz Lang didn't make dull pictures, and his first American film is an interesting study of small-town prejudice and revenge. Spencer Tracy is mistaken for a kidnapper and attacked by an lynch mob in a small midwestern city. Miraculously surviving a jailhouse fire set by the rioters, he gloats when several of the ringleaders go on trial for his "murder." Convinced by his fiancee (the limited Sylvia Sydney) that such revenge is unworthy of him, Tracy reveals that he's not really dead after all. So naturally he and his girl marry and live happily ever after. While unconvincing on several fronts, it's never dull and well worth a look. (I'll bet Hitch was royally pissed at Lang for swiping such a good one word title!)
