THIS PROVES KUBRIC CAME TO THE GAME SWINGING! THIS HAS A LOT OF DARING STUFF FOR ITS TIME WHICH REMAINS COMPELLING EVEN WITHOUT THE SHOCK. THE LEAD "ITALIAN" BAD GUY/EX-LOVER/PIMP IS AT ONCE SYMPATHETIC, CHILLING, AND OBVIOUSLY OF PARTIAL AFRICAN INHERITANCE. THE GUY & GAL ARE AT ONCE COMPLICATED, 3D, AND ALMOST CHILDLIKE. HER DAD'S PHOTOGRAPH ALSO LOOKED A LOT LIKE THE PIMP TO ME. THE FINALE HAS TO BE SEEN TO BE BELLIEVED.

WORTHWHILE KUBRICK NOIR
No doubt the main reason why this 67 minute noir from 1955 is so widely available is due to the fame of its director--Stanley Kubrick. Set in Manhatten and filmed mostly at night, this gritty story of a washed-up boxer, a blonde and her possessive boyfriend is surprisingly gripping. The two male leads--trust me, you've never heard of them--are quite good. The skanky blonde they fight over is far less talented. The heavy, played by Jamacian-born Frank Silvera, may remind you of an older OJ in his obsession for his girlfriend. The final fight sequence involving an axe is very intense. Marred, but not ruined, by an improbable happy, sappy Hollywood ending. Recommended.
