SPOILERS! another release from pete tombs' "mondo macabro" enterprise, "satanico pandemonium" (1973) is a great looking mexican nunsploitation film that, for the most part, favors leisurely, lyrical atmosphere over atrocity. the imagery is much more reminiscent of "national geographic" than "alucarda." as "sister maria," cecilia pezet made me think of the "cat people" era nastassia kinski in appearance, but with a mousy persona. she's naked a lot and you'll be loving it. maria is tempted by an apple weilding "luzbel, you can call me lucifer." she tries to resist, punishing herself with a belt of thorns and very gentle self flagellation (uttering soft moans of ecstasy), but she folds quickly. in a rather transgressive twist, she tries to seduce "marcello," a very innocent pre-teen shepherd who looks like a young luzbel. she tries to fondle him, but he runs home, appalled, to grandma. later, she goes to his house, strips and crawls into bed with him, with his grandmother sitting on the other side of a flimsy curtain! a suicidal black nun, who joined the order to escape ethnic bigotry only to land in the clutches of a sadistic mother superior, makes out with maria. when maria sees her with a noose around her neck, maria kicks the stool out from under her with a smile. another nun comes on to maria, but turns into luzbel when things start to get hot & heavy. maria's murderous indecency catches up with her. the other nuns march on her, carrying burning crosses, to deliver her to the inquisition, and luzbel makes her see herself being tortured, in an unexpectedly graphic sequence out of tune with the rest of the film. bound naked, lying naked on her back, molten lead is poured into thick nozzled funnel inserted in her mouth. instead of painful cries, she utters pornographic moans. she screams when her torso is ripped with a metal claw and her eyeball is pulled out. the scene was apparently cut, as it shows her bound to a wall, screaming for no apparent reason. this horrific vision is all it takes to persuade maria to swear allegience to luzbel. in reward, instead of being tortured, she's made mother superior (she killed the old one). she presides over a bacchanale at the convent, with nuns (of all ages) in various degrees of undress playing guitar, drinking wine, feeding each other grapes, and dancing. luzbel commands maria: "go to the balcony. the town waits to greet its chosen one." there's nothing outside except a flock of sheep. the orgy turns into a satanic sacrifice, with the nuns taking turns stabbing maria, like the assassination of caesar. maria staggers, bleeding, to her cell. she falls into bed on her back, driving a knife all the way in, killing her. we then learn that its all been a seven day long fever dream, that maria was a victim of "the plague." the film ends with an apple munching luzbel stalking another beautiful, young nun. amen.
