When a mediocrity like Earl Holliman is given third billing, that's a good indication that this is probably not the best flick ever made. This Italian/American co-production from 1968 is one of the few films to deal with the other D-Day: the Allied invasion of Italy at Anzio. Unlike in Normandy, at Anzio there was no resistance because the Germans had retreated. The trouble began when instead of advancing on an "open" Rome, the Allies, sensing a trap, paused long enough to allow the enemy to prepare defenses. Thus, the extreme caution (or timidity) ultimately cost far more lives than an aggressive course of action would have done. Robert Mitchum, too old to play a soldier, is a cynical reporter embedded with the Army Rangers. When a small squad of Rangers headed by Peter Falk is attacked and destroyed one by one, Mitchum is forced to abandon his pacificist policy and pick up a weapon and defend himself. Fascinated by the phenomenon of war, Mitchum comes to the profound conclusion that men kill each other because they like it! Such a philosopher! Lest your life be incomplete should you not see every one of Ol' Sleepy Eyes movies, feel free to pass on this one.
