NOTHING WILD & WOOLLY HERE
This must be the excepion that proves the rule that all movies directed at teens must be unbelievably vulgar in order to succeed. Even though the four main leads are supposed to be 17, the lack of vulgarity and profanity would seem to suggest that its real audience is the 11-13 year-old crowd. And indeed, it's little Jenna Malone as a mature 12-year old with leukemia who almost hijacks the film. A pair of jeans which "magically" fits all four girls and which seems to bring good luck to the wearer, is the glue that holds four stories together. Except for the absence of an African-American, the girls represent a politically correct sample of American youth: an athletic blonde, an artistic brunette, a budding feminist filmmaker and a chubby Latino. Keeping in touch via letters (teens still write letters??), the girls learn about love and responsibility and all those things teens are supposed to learn about at 17. Much too nice and wholesome for most W&W customers---no chainsaws here, darn it! What's a sweet little movie like this doing in that den of filth anyway?
