this 1981 russian movie was a disappointment. i want my rasputin movies to be extremely lysergic or shockingly transgressive, preferably both. while not seeming to attempt realism or to evoke sympathy, "agony" humanizes rasputin somewhat, and borders on being whimsical. its a lightweight. when arty movies have absurdities such as the scene in "agony" where terrified strikers fleeing from soldiers are obviously running in a circle around a very small park, the conventional assumption is that the intent is surrealism, but my cynicism makes them seem much more likely to be symptomatic of incompetence. "agony" does have a few amusing moments buried in its agonizing 156 minute running time. a wall mural of a grass field has a hidden door. the unexpected sight of people walking through it is startling. rasputin blows off a meeting with the tsar, a prince, and the minister of the interior at the expense of the life of the flunky sent to fetch him, even after the flunky begs and plays the wife and children card. a debauchee mocks soldiers in a trench with a champagne cork "bullet." rasputin jumps a woman in front of a large party, including her husband. when the husband pounds him, rasputin tries to climb up a chimney to escape.
