Another Shaw Bros Classic
The Summer of 2001 will definitely be remembered by kung-fu movie buffs as a time of unprecedented DVD releases. Thanks to Ground Zero, we have available to us a lot of previously 'hard to find' films from the 70's and early 80's. Tired of that worn muddied film print? Go digital! The White Lotus Sect is one of many 'sects' that have turned up (and continue today) in lots of the old skool movies alongside the Sholin and Wu Dang [as far as I know they are/were a real sect], and in this flick Lo Lieh plays an evil White Lotus priest named Pai Mei, who has the ability to "float" when seeking to evade an adversary. In this movie he goes against Shaw star Gordon Liu (several times), and Gordon must figure out how to beat him - his solution will delight and surprise. Yet again we are treated to a visual feast, awesome choreography and a nice 'clean' richly colored copy for our viewing pleasure. Seems like Liu and Lo made several movies together, often utilizing "top 5" villain, Wang Lung Wei, who you may have seen appear in several high caliber Venoms movies. It's a good thing Gordon had his time at Shaw, because he made some movies of lesser quality [i.e. Warrior from Shaolin!] later on. It was his time at Shaw Bros., which really captured his merits. So if you're looking for some of the cream of the crop, consider some of these gems from the days of yore. I will caution however that not all of Ground Zero's releases are of the same high quality - but the Shaw movies they've been releasing seem to be (I've seen four so far). I give FOTWL 7 out of 10 stars. Matt
