DISAPPOINTING FOOTBALL FLICK
This 1979 film about pro football regularly turns up on lists of the best movies about sports. I finally got around to watching it and wasn't very impressed. Oh sure, I suppose the profanity and brief glimpses of bare male bottoms was all very daring for 1979. Nick Nolte isn't bad is the cigarette smoking, aging, smart ass tight end. Mac Davis is surprisingly good as the cocky quarterback. (Movie quarterbacks are ALWAYS cocky.) Some forgettable Canadian brunette named Gayle Haddon is Nolte's girlfriend. One or two real players have roles as well. The on-field action is minimal and not especially convincing. Oliver Stone's ANY GIVEN SUNDAY of a few years ago is a kind of nastier, more depressing update of this flick.
