pete tomb’s and his mondo macabro dvd label are a priceless resource for those of us who prefer our entertainment on "the wild side of world cinema." uber-villain "mr. tiger" is a sexual sadist who murders the parents of our heroines, two sisters who lead a girl motorbike gang, so that he can use their land for a factory that manufactures "the formula" and thereby corner "the worldwide aphrodisiac market." the formula usually causes a woman to squirm and moan dramatically, but bad batches can also do things like cause the recipient to break out in boiling blood blisters and eventually explode in a pink meat mist. its hard to find good help. the bad guys kill unlucky cooks until they kidnap young medical student "larry," who apparently knows the secret recipe. other than the murdered father and larry, all men are pigs except an old jungle farmer / medicine man who treats bullet wounds by forcing a live snake head first into the wound tract, then retrieving the projectile from the snake's jaws. all the women wear wild costumes, everything from form-fitting fetish vinyl to jagged-hemmed daisy mae mini-dresses, all in a dizzying procession of colors that never appear in nature, some in patterns that range from the conservative, such as leopard prints, to epilepsy inducing geometric patterns. the lesbian villainess has tattoos on her face and thighs. even the firearms are bizarre looking, clumsy sci-fi toys. despite a lot of cleavage, hot pants cheekiness, and some very crude crotch close-ups, "virgins…" is oddly devoid of nudity. even the wet-clothing scenes are modest, with only one that is even slightly revealing. the gore is infrequent but spectacular. meat flys from a land mine victim. a tree limb, complete with leaves and twig branches, is thrown through a bad guy. wounded men emit cruel, agonized vocalizations. the dub track apparently comes in different versions. the trailer for "virgins…" in the dvd extras has racier dialogue. the luxurious dvd extras, typical of a mondo macabro release, has a documentary on indonesian exploitation that echoes tomb's chapter on indonesia in the book "fear without frontiers." a 70 minute reel of trailers for 70s indonesian exploitation features movies like "blazing battle," an anti-japanese occupation film that promises a lot of cruelty, and "hell raiders," an anti-dutch occupation film that has dutch subtitles!
