A SHAME IT AIN'T BETTER
Pretty boy Orlando Bloom is a California shoe designer whose latest design has flopped, losing his company gadzillions. Fired and about to commit suicide, he gets a call informing him that his Dad has died in Elizabethtown, KY, of all places, and will he go there to arrange the funeral? He does, and on the night flight, he meets an overly friendly and aggressive flight attendant, Kirsten Dunst, who teaches him the local pronunciation of our fair city. She's cute, he's pretty, so Duh, of course they fall for each other--eventually. But we don't really care about that, do we? We want to see how Director Crowe has presented our beloved Ville. There's a shot of the skyline, the U of L silos, some street signs, a cavort in Cave Hill Cemetery, and some major scenes in the Brown Hotel. I had hoped for more, but then the movie isn't about Louisville or even E'town, for that matter. Bloom's Dad's E'town neighbors are good folk, even if they do dress badly and talk with a funny accent. Crowe's portrayal of these small town Kentuckians is basically respectful--by no means are they retards or ignorant hicks. My chief complaint is about Bloom--he seems diffident, unengaged, out of place. I realize he is supposed to be doubly depressed by his titanic shoe failure and the death of his father, but this means that Dunst has to supply all of the energy. The girl's cute enough, I guess, but I kept wishing she were Reese Witherspoon. Dammit, I want this thing redone with Reese and Johnny Depp! And set a couple of scenes in Wild & Wooly!
