charles band and his merry band of full mooners really crank out the cheapo horror. what experience i have with their catalog indicates that band's formula relies on bizarre twists on horror cliches and conventional morality. in "shrunken heads," the heroic adult figure was a big shot in haiti's infected tonton macoute, who fled to america to escape the arrival of unbearable democracy. in "subspecies" (1991), a transylvanian gypsy has stolen a stone that drips the blood of all saints from the vatican, and has used it to domesticate the vampires, who had previously saved the humans from the turks by slurping their invading force dry. this insane premise is bolstered with cheap fx. really cheap. female breasts, which are, as noted by roger corman, the very cheapest fx, are best represented by the tasty irina movila. filmed on location (in a country where American dollars go a very long way) the scenery sets the mood so effectively as to qualify as fx. radu, the evil vampire whose greed leads him to murder his father and break the truce with the humans, sports makeup that looks a little bit like max shreck's "nosferatu." he's played by anders hove, who gives good death gurgle. the rest of the cast is about as talented as the ham at derby dinner doghouse, including cult favorite angus "phantasm" scrimm. rosary beads replace buckshot in shot shells. "the festival celebrating the night the vampires saved the people from the turks" has some amusingly imaginative but amateurishly constructed masks. the simulated severed heads are especially crappy. one is done very simply, by leaving the victim’s mask on. "michelle," the apparent heroine, is mutually attracted to radu's handsome little brother "stefan." they look enough alike, down to nearly identical haircuts, to be disturbing. there’s a comment about her having his father’s eyes. some nonsense about digging up vampires, who have been outed by horses refusing to cross their graves, staking their hearts and then cutting them out and boiling them to make vampire heart soup to cure vampire fever stuck in my mind. fast fades into different scenes, conveniently spaced for commercial breaks, seems to indicate this was filmed with the t.v. market in mind. “ss2: bloodstone” has an imaginative radu reassembly scene, followed by the thoroughly original sequence where stefan is shafted, spurts, shrivels, and sizzles into a skeleton. anders hove ("radu") is the only returning character, and his schtick degenerates into pure camp. his shadow is more interesting than he is. "michelle" is recast with denise duff, who is willing to put them out there, something laura tate, the original, was unwilling to do. radu's decomposed "mummy" (get it? his mother) is nastier than the sexually abused corpse in "nekromantik." "rebecca" is played by melanie "kirk's daughter" shatner. neither duff or shatner are shy about nudity. duff, with long curly hair, layered lacy "transylvanian" clothes, and a glass coffin, backed by interesting rock on the soundtrack, has a definite stevie nicks thing going on.
