this is a wonderfully sleazy movie. its not in tune with stevenson's aims: hyde is surprisingly tender with the ladies. his "cruelty," as barrymore plays him, lies in his fickleness, but his victims are already highly compromised women in the victorian scheme of things. when he finally turns violent at the end it is a jarring non sequitor, very much a sop to the original story and to conventional morality. barrymore's stinky ham is highly entertaining and the rest of the cast is quite good. nita naldi is very appealing. the extras are very much worth checking out, especially "dr pyckle and mr pride." stan laurel's take on barrymore is so spot-on and mocking that barrymore must have wanted to rough him up.

This is Barrymore at his almost best.Ham, schman,he ruled the planet at that time. Without him all ya got is a lot of John Louis and some spilled liquid.The conversion scene is one of a kind.Without a lot of makeup.Thats's acting and a whole lot more.back in them days acting was comprised of facial countenence and melodramatic gesticulating.Of the Barrymore kind. Thank you all very much.Now,ladies and gentlemen,onward and upward with the stars we'll go. To John Barrymore land,where the acting was never more accomplished and the stars were quite qualified in a world that was created and brought to screen by their greatness. This is a man who went through all the genres,starting with vaudeville-he was a song and dance man-classical theatre,the great American Hamlet,the silent movies,straight thru into talking pictures.Nobody else did all that.Nobody Nicole Williamson. Whoever is the grand master of starting a section on actors{genre} I would indubitably appreciate a whole bunch of Barrynore{John,specifically}films.
