JUSTICE OR REVENGE?
Despairing of bringing to justice the eleven surviving terrorists who murdered the Israeli athletes at Munich in 1972, Prime Minister Golda Meir decides to track them down and kill them one by one. Eric Bana,the leader of this assassination team, is a family man who wrestles with the moral implications of his actions. Since Israel had abolished the death penalty, had the terrorists been convicted in a court of law, they would not have been executed. So are Bana and his team agents of justice or merely revengeful killers hardly morally superior to the terrorists themselves? Director Spielberg would seem to believe the latter; he seems to feel that in acting in this fashion, Israel has forfeited the moral high ground, so to speak. Filmed in dark hues and at night to suggest the shadowy and unsavoury nature of this enterprise, the film runs to almost three hours. While 15 or 20 minutes could have been cut to good effect, Spielberg manages to sustain interest throughout. A thoughtful and well done piece of work, it will (as intended) provoke debate and discussion from its viewers.
