LOUISVILLIAN STEPHEN GAGHAN
Louisvillian Stephen Gaghan, born in 1965 (wonder if he was ever a Wild & Wooly customer?), wrote and directed this sophisticated, multi-faceted drama about corruption in the oil business and assassination by the CIA. Another Kentuckian, George Clooney, gives a memorable performance as a rogue CIA agent. Ranging from Washington to Beirut to the south of France, this open-ended film tries to tell three or four stories at the same time. However, unlike the stories in Gaghan's earlier screenplay for TRAFFIC, these stories don't appear to be related. Those viewers who demand a neat, straightforward plot with clearly drawn heroes and villains may find this film unsatisfying. The lack of a clearly defined center gives it a decided European (some might say "artsy") feel. What did I learn? Well, that the oil business is complicated and corrupt; and that the CIA sometimes arranges the sudden death of those individuals who do not have the best interests of the USA at heart. Not exactly earth-shattering insights, to be sure. While interesting and worthwhile, SYRIANA is not the gem it could have and probably should have been. And the title is a mystery--the country of Syria doesn't appear to be involved at all.
