Ti Lung
The Revenger came out in 1979 and was one of Ti Lung's [A Better Tomorrow] post-Shaw Brothers films. Ti Lung plays a kung fu master named Shao, who is a thorn in the side of the local 'corrupt' government official, a man called Master Mao (a villain I see a fair amount of, but who's actual name I do not know. He's pretty good, but no Whang Jang Li). So Mao decides to set Shao up by having his men pretend to rape his (Mao's) sister. This is in order to draw Shao into a false security with her and to ambush him later. The sister falls in love with Shao however, and will bear his son. Shao is assisted a bit by another kung fu master named Shur Lin. The plot has a few twists in it, but Shao winds up getting killed, only to have his son come back (also played by Ti Lung) in order to "collect his father's bones" which - and I have no idea why- have been kept by Mao's henchmen as if they were shrine pieces. Famed kick boxer Tan Tao Liang makes an appearance in this movie [sure he's a great kicker, but he's acting ability is non-existent], as does the fierce and lovely Lily Li, who holds the screen on her own. Her role is unfortunately short, and is only there to allow for her daughter, played by the talented Shih Szu, an entrance into the story. She is trained by Shur Lin. These women are part of another family which Master Mao had put on his agenda to destry, and so Shih Szu, Ti Lung and Tan tao Liang all exact their revenge in the end. Wheh! This film has a lot of exotic weapons in it, not to mention great costumes and pretty good set design. The director is Pao Seuh Li, who comes from the Chang Cheh school of old-skool [Pao also did 'Blooded Treasury Fight' and 'The 8 Escorts' which also features Tan Tao Liang and Lily Li] movies. Its funny, having said all this, this is not a favorite movie of mine. The dubbing was a serious distraction, and I kept thinking it was like listening to Monty python's flying circus! Ti Lung has a great many better films than this. Still, a genre fan may at least want to see it. There is, as of 8/01, a DVD copy hitting the market, so keep a look out.
