<[:-} who knew stalin could be so much fun?
this piece of stalinist "truth speak" has surprising entertainment value, especially after the film turns dark at the end. we see "basil, the activist" shot in the back as he capers gaily like the sugarplum fairy down a dark lane. "basil's fiancee" is thoughtful enough to grieve, at great length, in the nude, with zaftig animation. "thomas whitehorse, a landowner" plows a field with his head, dust and small clods flying, doing a breakdance spinning top, and then does curly joe airplane spins on his feet, all out of grief of losing his land to the collective. this highly ironic paean to the peasants was filmed during stalin's first "five year plan," an extraordinally cruel, iron-fisted, bureaucratic disruption of the lives of the same peasants, eventually resulting in mass starvation and mass execution of semingly randomly-chosen "activists."
