Donnie Yen & Woo Ping = Stellar!
Drunken Tai Chi is a 1984 chop socky that is one of the last of its kind. It does however herald the first staring role for Donnie Yen, who is excellent here. This is also a fairly early effort by Yuen Woo Ping [Crouching Tiger etc etc] . You may have seen their more recent collaboration (1993), the awesome "Iron Monkey", or be familiar with Woo Ping's earlier classic "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow", starring Jackie Chan and Hwang Jang Li. Drunken Tai Chi is comedy kung-fu at its finest - and I really tend to like serious chang-cheh stuff more than main-land comedy. But this movie is really excellent: very very funny (alright, they overdue it a bit, but they make up for it) and just plain genius choreography. Tell ya what: it gets a very rare 8.5 stars out of 10!! "Dynamo" is a very cool Bruce Li movie, in the bell-bottom kung-fu class. But of this type of movie, Li is KING. Bruce Li's real name is Ho Chung Tao, and he is really his own man. Very skilled and charismatic. So don't blow him off and think "oh, its just a bruce lee clone!" That's for the nit-wits, this guy is gold. Now Bruce Le, he is not gold, he is more like 'copper' (heh,heh)- but I like him too. But still, he's no Ho! I give this movie an easy 7.5 out of 10. The disc, which is a cool Ground Zero double feature, gets 9 out of 10 for 'overall presentation at an affordable price'. Rent or buy ASAP! Matt
