Not creepy
I thought this looked like kind of a fun movie, but it reminds me yet again why I don't like most new movies. It doesn't work as a horror movie or as a tribute to older black horror movies like "J.D.'s Revenge" or a tribute to Italian horror. The director spends a lot of time giving credit to gothic Italian horror in the documentary on the disc, but I don't sense that at all in the movie. There was nothing creepy about it. The plot doesn't really make much sense either, which is Ok, the plots in Italian horror movies usually don't make sense, but they've got the looks to make up for it. What's up with the DJs rocking out to a tune that repeats endlessly? I didn't hear anything going on there that required a DJ. Why did the DJ need a break from that and have to be replaced by the other DJ? Huh?

i’m guessing this is the first “bitten by a wererat” movie, but the bitten character dies before the infection develops. this is just one of many missed opportunities in this movie, passed over to allow lots and lots (did i say lots?) of "positive” character development. this is the kind of movie that would have you believe a 70s numbers running gangster was beloved by the people. crack is the ruination (children should stick to gin & juice and the bubonic chronic, i guess), forced on the black community by the man (probably true), and the lottery bleeds the people dry (as opposed to the wise investment afforded by “the numbers”). “bones” has its moments, but most of what separates it from the average dumb ass teen slasher film is the endless, preachy yak yak in place of action. and what a lovely sermon it is. this is a movie where the unjust are punished by the supernatural, but the only reason i can see that two of the characters have to die is that their father married a white woman and moved to the suburbs, and another because her mother was there, unwillingly, when it all went down. there is the obligatory “tribute” to italian horror. i guess the dario argento influence is trying to set the guiness record for how many maggots you can blow on an actor at one time. the most horrific thing about this movie is the way pam grier is wasted. the two writers, simon & metcalffe, gave the world “carnosaur” and “kalifornia” (not to mention “revenge of the nerds” oops.)
