in the opening sequence, a vietnamese peasant woman, engulfed in flames, falls into a dug out prisoner cage, and the two american p.o.w.s inside promptly start munching on her charbroiled, still living flesh. the c.o., who also happens to be a friend who comes from their home town (john saxon), reaches in to pull them out and one of them sinks his teeth into saxon's arm. later, saxon is a reluctant child molester / biter. i would say that only the italians could take something this sick and make it this dull, but the french could make it duller, and add a thick coat of pretension as well. this is the kind of movie where you have to think about how transgressive it is to enjoy it, because the artless way it is presented has little visceral impact, despite "special" effects like circular grinder thigh filets, a gouged out eye, and a "death becomes her" type view through a shotgun blast to the torso. there's a lot of "atmospheric" filer, much of it walking around in a sewer. saxon always had a great presence for dumbass heroic action movies, and deserved better roles. he was certainly no worse than powers boothe.
