<[:-} laughing just to keep from crying
this is a great documentary. i was ten years old during the cuban missile crisis. all the “civil defense” nonsense documented in this film is hysterically funny now, but was very real then. i don’t believe the public was as gullible about u.s. government propaganda as this documentary suggests, at least in rural kentucky. i didn’t know anyone with a bomb shelter. the consensus was that they were useless, and that no one wanted to survive in an irradiated hell anyway. in the army in 1980 i learned that the u.s. never agreed to a “no first strike” policy because they held the warsaw pact infantry to be overwhelming. our policy was to use “limited” nuclear strikes in countries that had been invaded. this is the reason for the anti-nuke protests in germany that drew millions. we had small nukes that could be fired from conventional artillery. i learned later (from p.b.s.!) that we also had even smaller nukes that be fired from shoulder held missile launchers (bazookas).

When reality seems surreal
This is a brilliant piece of work. It's a documentary formed by a collage of snippets of news broadcasts, ads and school educatial films from the early days of the cold war. Takes you outside the sphere of the cold war to make you realize how truly strange it was/is to be living under the protection of mutually assured destruction. I first saw it one night when I watched and "Slackers" together. They made a strange combination. They actually work together, in a way that's hard to explain unless you experience it for yourself.

An Awesome Peice of Work
You'll need something to cleanse your emotional palette after this one. It'll piss you off in disbelief and make you laugh in disbelief at the same time. It will take you on a roller coaster of emotions that’ll make you hate everybody involved (not with this film, but with those involved with lying to the public). It also contains a hilarious soundtrack of propaganda music on top of certain sections of ridiculously nightmarish film. Don’t be frightened by picking it up, though. I don’t think it’s a film that’ll leave you depressed for days or anything, it’s just a little shocking, and very very funny. Also, as a documentary (or collage of footage, depending on how you look at it), it’s a very well edited and thought out piece of work, and should be required viewing in schools. Though it should not be overanalyzed. Schools need to stop doing that.
