this dvd froze up on me with about 26 minutes left to play, but i didn’t really care. this is an odd “dogme ‘95” film with privileged slackers (and one very lost, semi-captive, much less fortunate woman) “searching for the inner idiot.” a lot of it is obnoxious “taking the piss out of” innocent bystanders by pretending to be (pick your adjective) “spasses” \ “retards.” some of it is weird, altered-state seeking, attempts at empathy. “the family” has some downs syndrome patients over for a party and all except stoffer, the ring leader, show genuine affection for them. the near-documentary feel ( often, i had to remind myself that the presence of the cameras would have made most of the scenes impossible) both adds to the value of this film and makes it irritating. i probably stayed with it as long as i did because i didn’t want to believe that it really was as pointless and unpleasant as it seemed to be. perhaps the unseen denouement brings redemption.
