<[:-} epic ode to liberalism from the director of “the clansman”
i turned the sound off and watched this listening to “akroasis” by the big swifty, “somnium” by sianspheric and other, mostly instrumental, cortex dilating masterpieces. this is an amazing, epic movie to watch, from a famous local boy, that just happens to fall within my realm, i.e. bad movie hell, mostly for its wacky politics. there are four sub-movies. the “jesus and the pharisees” stuff didn’t leave much of an impression, but seems to be a dig at the jews. we learn that babylon was a paradise lost because of (pagan) priestly treachery against a benign, humanist king. the persecution of the huguenots, actually the struggle of insurgent capitalism against reactionary feudalism, is probably a condemnation of catholicism in griffith’s hands. the best part is the “contemporary” stuff. it points out the hypocrisy of cutting the wages of subsistence workers to fund “charities” that worked mostly to try to convince working class women of their inferiority. a striking band of workers are fired on by government soldiers with m1 rifles, a gatling gun, and a cannon, later revealed to have been firing blanks (?!?) the actual violence is represented as having been committed by pinkertonite private thugs. prohibition is condemned and a woman’s baby is shown being dragged away from her because the “charity” women caught her with “cold medicine” she obtained legally from the pharmacy. getting caught, again, with tasty looking dark beer from a kindly neighbor seals her fate. lots of stuff to warp the mind in this movie!
